Skill position player injuries across the league have teams looking for the next man up. Cordarrelle Patterson should get more opportunities in the Patriots’ backfield.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss made had some interesting takes about Sony Michel’s injury and what it could mean for the Patriots at running back. I agree with Reiss that Le’Veon Bell is not likely to appear on the Pat’s roster after the trade deadline. I disagree that the Patriots need to acquire another running back via trade.
James White is averaging nearly 17 fantasy points per game. Kenjon Barner barely saw the field in week eight’s game against the Bills.
That left the remaining running plays to Cordarrelle Patterson.
Patterson showed Monday night that he has what it takes to fill in at running back. He already has a few games with double digit fantasy points as a wide receiver.
Like Ty Montgomery when Eddie Lacy went down for the Packers, Patterson has a chance transition from WR to RB. This makes him an interesting option at Flex on fantasy rosters, regardless of his listed position. The Pats’ offense will find ways to use him at RB going forward.
With Rex Burkhead and Jeremy Hill on IR, the Patriots still have depth on the roster at running back that could return next season. Trading for another RB now doesn’t make much sense, especially when they have Patterson showing he can find open space to run.
The Patriots have an easy schedule for the remainder of the season, with their toughest opponents being the Packers, Steelers, and Vikings. Even with tough opponents, the opportunities for Patterson to get more time in the running game should materialize.
Just some dude who geeks out on fantasy football.
