Ito Smith was drafted in the fourth round as a running back for the Atlanta Falcons. Check out this youtube video of his highlights from playing at Southern Miss and you’ll wonder why he wasn’t taken earlier.
He can run between the tackles, shows explosive speed and vision, and pass catching skill. The Falcons are loaded at running back with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. However, their choice to draft more talent at running back makes sense as a longer term decision. Behind those two, Smith looks like their running back for the future.
I picked up Smith from waivers in fantasy with a long term outlook as well. Freeman is returning from injury this week, and Dan Quinn says he will play. Even though that could mean very few opportunities for Smith in week five, I’m keeping him on my bench.
He already has a rushing touchdown and seven receptions this year according to Rotoworld stats. Ito Smith seems poised to break out when given his chance.
NFL game scores are relatively high compared to recent years. Pass-catching running backs like Ezekiel Elliott and Alvin Kamara seem to be part of the reason. Ito Smith appears to be part of that same class, fitting into where things are trending offensively. I plan to watch Smith closely this season. Even if he doesn’t get much workload this season, I’ll consider him as a keeper for next year.
Just some dude who geeks out on fantasy football.
